97-Year Old Beatles Relic Earns ?ú115k despite McCartney Calling It A Fake

A 1911 payslip made out to E. Rigby has been sold at auction ?ú115,000 ($AUD269,000).

The document suggests that Paul McCartney?ÇÖs fictitious character Eleanor Rigby actually existed although McCartney is sticking by his original story and saying he made her up.

This week, the document featuring the name E. Rigby and stating she was a Scullery Maid sold for ?ú115,000.

In a statement released prior to the auction, McCartney said, "Eleanor Rigby is a totally factious character that I made up. If someone wants to spend money buying a document to prove a fictitious character exists, that's fine with me."

The seller, Annie Mawson, claims McCartney himself sent her the document. She says she wrote and asked him to donate ?ú500,000 but instead he sent the document.

McCartney has always claimed that the name Eleanor Rigby came from actress Eleanor Bron, who starred with him in The Beatles movie ?ÇÿHelp?ÇÖ, and the Rigby name came from a wine seller.

Whoever paid the ?ú115,000 for the one page historic pay slip may be in for a shock if they ever go to sell it. It appears, at least by McCartney?ÇÖs statement, that the document is worthless.
