Green Day : American Idiot

Green Day American Idiot

By Tim Cashmere

Green Day have outlasted even their biggest fan's predictions as they moved from what was once straight forward commercial punk to diverse and creative rock music and now the ultimate of seventies progressive rock ideas, the concept album.

A concept album can die miserably or it can flourish and tell a story that just couldn?t be contained in a single song. Green Day with 'American Idiot' tell the story of a world gone mad with paranoia and propaganda as instilled by the same leaders who once believed
that Russia's communist propaganda was "bad".

As for Billie Joe's axemanship, the man can pull of a decent solo now, a long way from the days of him barely knowing an E chord if it were to kick him in the behind. As for the five part pop punk epics 'Jesus of Suburbia' and 'Homecoming', they seemed to have had a lesson in song structure as well.

It's Green Day sounding like Green Day, but it's a great leap forward for their song writing skills. They have become a dynamic, melodic and brilliant example of what pop punk can be.
