Rob Thomas : Something
To Be
By Eve Jenkin
Matchbox 20 frontman Rob Thomas
has temporarily split from his incredibly successful rock
outfit to indulge in a pop release. The result is 2005s
Something To Be.
Attempting to capitalize on the success of his Santana duet
Smooth, Thomas has somewhat fallen short with
Something To Be. Maybe his branching out into
pop should have been a one-off venture, but considering Thomas
has won Billlboards Songwriter Of The Year two years
in a row one would expect the material to be a bit stronger
than that heard on Something To Be.
It is catchy at times, most notably single Lonely No
More, but for the most part it sounds like a rather
cheesy Ricky Martin/Justin Timberlake/Backstreet Boys hybrid.
Which
um
isnt the best combination if you
can imagine it.
Produced by Matt Serletic (Matchbox 20, Willie Nelson), Something
To Be also features musical guests John Mayer, Robert
Randolph, Mike Campbell (Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers),
Jeff Trot (Sheryl Crowe), Mike Elizondo (Dr.Dre)
