28 Days: Extremist Makeover
By Tim Cashmere
23rd September 2004
28 Days have been around for
quite a while and let's face it, like the Collingwood Magpies,
as many people hate them as they do love them. Well unlike
some of the Aussie bands of varying genres, 28 Days are progressing.
Once upon a time they were a wannabe rap/metal band. And
while frightening hints of those origins still linger in their
current tunes, they've come a long way. I'm sure the fact
that legendary rock producer Ulrich Wild was flown out here
to control the dials helped them get just some of the powerful
guitar sounds on there, but deep down it's up to the band.
There are moments on this disc that might make you cringe
('Girls 101' for example), but where it comes to a tune like
'Birthday' the band morph into a catchy pop-punk institution,
or 'Hate Now' where their time spent playing the hardcore
shows back in the early days rears its ugly head.
Love 'em or hate 'em, they're here to stay. While they still
might not have made an album that will win their enemies over,
they've made something that their regular fans can love.
