Jebediah : Braxton Hicks

by Tim Cashmere

A lot of Australian bands have used their career up to date as a launching pad for their twenty first century releases, kind of a practice time to get them up to an international standard. So why do Jebediah sound like they haven't progressed past a high school band getting their first wind of creativity?

The Perth based quartet opens their album with 'More Alone', led by the same bland vocals of Kevin Mitchell that has plagued them since their first jam. This moves into 'Loaded Gun', a faster, punkier tune with some interesting production on the bridge.

'Sew Your Life' provides the first moment of change through the album. The band slow down for a moment, but somehow don't manage to make space in the song. There is a note thrown in on every beat, rather than the band just playing what they feel.

The band really stretches themselves with 'The Seven Signs of Ageing' and even more impressive, Kevin Mitchell even successfully breaks free of his one octave range.

'Braxton Hicks' is a small step in the right direction for Jebediah, but they're still doing the same thing over and over again. It's one thing for a band to have 'a sound', but it's another thing to have that same sound for every song.
