Jock Cheese : The Cheese Platter

The Undercover Review

Once upon a time part of the T.I.S.M. cohort, now Jock Cheese is going it solo! But does his lonesome debut live up to the emphatically high standards set by his once partners in crime? Let's find out!

The album opens with 'Up There Calisi', instantly reigniting the social-commentary-style humor that T.I.S.M. were famous for. 'La Traviata' is interesting, I can not figure out if it is a joke or just a slice of Cheese's life. "In the mornings on the freeway I peer into other cars / It's like staring at the loneliness of galaxies and stars / One man one car, one man one car all solitary 'cause / All them guys, they feel like me / Got nuttin' to love."

Now, years and years after dodgy bastard Christopher Skase grabbed squillions from shareholders, he's still getting crap for it (and rightfully so!) with 'Totally Addicted to Skase'. Not only does Skase get a beating here, but also Josh Abrahams (Totally Addicted to Bass) and Robert Palmer (You might as well face it / you're addicted to love) as Cheese repeats "You might as well face it / you're addicted to Skase".

'I Done It with the Drama Teacher' is an interesting look into Cheese's school years. Perhaps it is autobiographical, perhaps it is the dialogue to a fantasy, or perhaps this is a more recent thing, (A school in Ringwood perhaps?) after all, nobody says he is a child during this escapade!

A woman named Kerry receives her dose of Jock Cheese humor with 'Why Don't You Get A Bigger Set of Tits?' I wonder how she felt about this song being named after her?

'You Guarantee Fame with Two First Names' is an instruction manual to fame, or basically stretching those seven words to a definition lasting a few laughable minutes.

The album closes with 'Just the Straight Dope'. Six tracks with the exact same title. The downside is, they're entirely instrumental, henceforth not really being that funny.

I laughed far far more during any T.I.S.M. listening. It would be interesting to see The Jock Cheese live performance, although so far I have heard no plans of such a show, but until then, I think I'll keep this CD on the shelf.
